Why Use Eye Cream and Is It Necessary?

What comes to mind when you hear the word “aging”? Some think of the beautiful journey that is, growing old. Others think strictly in terms of physical appearance. If you are the latter, you may be picturing those dainty creases around the eyes, otherwise known as a sign of maturing skin. The skin surrounding the eyes is thin and ever so delicate, so it is here that the signs of aging first come to light.

This is why extra care is needed to look after this fragile skin. There has been some debate in recent years over whether or not eye cream is necessary with the term ‘glorified moisturiser’ being thrown around. Using a moisturiser may be ‘good enough’. However, at Perricone good enough has never been good enough. Why use eye creams? The answer is for targeted results.

Is eye cream necessary?

Let’s begin by discussing why an eye cream is necessary.

Firstly, there are fewer oil glands in the area around the eyes. This means the skin here is prone to dry out quicker than on the rest of the face. It therefore requires extra hydration, one of the reasons why we use eye creams.

Secondly, as this skin is so delicate, it is also prone to irritation. Using products that are specifically designed for the fragile eye area means that harsh ingredients aren’t a concern. For example, Perricone’s Hypoallergenic CBD Eye Cream is formulated with 99% pure Cannabidiol (CBD), making it an ultra-gentle cream designed to calm and smooth the appearance of even the most sensitive skin. Deeply soothing and nourishing eye creams are necessary to target the under-eyes with essential hydration and nourishment without irritating the fragile area.

What do eye creams do?

A lack of hydration is shown around the eyes in the form of fine lines and wrinkles. By topping up the moisture in this area with eye creams, you can minimise the appearance of thirsty skin and in turn, appear more youthful.

What’s more, with blinking and squinting, there’s a lot of movement around the eyes. The continuous movement puts more pressure on this delicate part of the face. Therefore, eye creams with a potent formula for wrinkles are particularly useful if your concern is this specific area becoming stretched and stressed. Perricone’s Essential Fx Acyl-Glutathione Smoothing & Brightening Under-Eye Cream works to reduce the look of deep wrinkles and creases by protecting and replenishing the fragile skin around the eyes. An intensely hydrating Vitamin F Blend works to restore suppleness and create a healthy glow by improving skin’s moisture barrier.

Combined with a healthy diet and the nutrients you need, the benefits of the right eye cream is the final piece of the puzzle to radiant, bright under eyes.

What are the benefits of eye creams?

Eye creams have plenty of benefits. However, some are more targeted to certain under-eye concerns than others depending on their list of ingredients. For example, the Cannabidiol in Perricone’s CBD Eye Cream works well to re-hydrate extremely sensitive skin while the antioxidant Glutathione in Essential Fx Acyl-Glutathione Under-Eye Cream helps to protect and repair fragile skin while reducing the look of deep creases.

If dull, dark circles are a concern, Vitamin C Ester gives the appearance of collagen-rich skin by visibly smoothing, brightening and minimising discolouration over time. It’s one of the ingredients that makes up the formula of Perricone’s Cold Plasma Plus+ Advanced Eye Cream. One of the benefits of this eye cream is that along side Vitamin C Ester, it is packed with other potent ingredients including copper tripeptides, and omegas 3, 6 and 9. This power-house combination targets all of the main under-eye concerns, including the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, crows feet, fine lines and loss of firmness.

How to use eye cream

To use eye cream, simply gently pat the chosen product onto eye area morning and evening using your ring finger. This finger is your weakest, so will naturally have the gentlest touch. Combine your application with a gentle massage, moving the tips of your ring finger upwards to improve the circulation and stimulate the build-up of fluid to get moving, reducing puffiness.

Can you use moisturiser as eye cream?

The skin on the body is tougher than that on the face so can withstand thicker, harsher formulas. For example, you would (hopefully) never use a body lotion on the face. In the same way, this is why you should use an eye cream. The formula of a general face moisturiser is different to one that is designed specifically for the gentle under-eyes.

Aside from this, if you have a specific under-eye concern, such as dullness and wrinkles, your general moisturiser may not contain the necessary ingredients in the required concentration to tackle these concerns.

That’s why it can be concluded that an eye cream is, in fact, necessary in your skincare routine. Discover the full range of Perricone’s eye treatments here.
