What Is the Good Housekeeping Institute and Why It Matters

Last Updated: 01/10/2025

At Perricone MD, we’ve always believed in science you can see. Our products are designed to deliver real, visible results, and we know that claims mean nothing without proof.

That’s why we partnered with the Good Housekeeping Institute.

This isn’t a beauty award or a magazine editor’s pick. The Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI) is an independent testing facility that evaluates products based on performance, safety, and consumer satisfaction. Their badge can’t be bought, it has to be earned.

What Is the Good Housekeeping Institute?

The Good Housekeeping Institute has been a trusted name in product testing for over 100 years. Based in London, their team of scientists, engineers, analysts and beauty experts run one of the most thorough consumer product testing programs in the UK.

They test everything from electrical appliances to skincare, using both advanced lab equipment and real consumer feedback to validate product performance.

Their GHI Approved badge is only awarded to products that deliver on what they promise. That’s what makes it meaningful — it’s not based on trends, branding, or marketing,it’s based on data.

What Does the Testing Actually Involve?

When a Perricone MD product goes to the Good Housekeeping Institute, it undergoes a multi-stage process:

1. Clinical Testing WithLab Equipment

Products are evaluated using professional-grade technology inside GHI’s Multi-Skin Test Centre. This includes:

  • Hydration measurement to assess moisture levels before and after application
  • Oil control testing to determine how well the product balances skin
  • Skin barrier function to evaluate how the product supports and protects the skin’s barrier

They also use the VISIA complexion analyser, which provides an objective scan of the skin to measure:

  • Wrinkles
  • Pore size
  • Texture
  • Evenness
  • Fine lines

This equipment helps validate anti-aging and radiance claims by comparing actual skin changes over time.

2. 30-Person Consumer Testing Panel

Real people also test the product over several weeks. They report on:

  • Texture and feel
  • Absorption and wear
  • Scent
  • Skin comfort
  • Visible changes in hydration, radiance, tone, or smoothness

It’s not just one or two quotes, the Good Housekeeping Institute collects extensive feedback, including scores and written comments from an entire panel to ensure accuracy and fairness.

3. Final Score and Claim Verification

Every product receives a total score out of 100, along with a breakdown of how it performed in each category. If it meets GHI’s standards, it’s awarded the GHI-Approved badge.

That approval is valid for one year and can only be used with GHI’s permission, which keeps the endorsement credible and tightly controlled.

What Were the Results for Perricone MD?

We submitted our bestselling High Potency Face Finishing & Firming Tinted Moisturizer to the Good Housekeeping Institute. Here’s what the consumer testing panel had to say:

  • 100% agreed it felt lightweight on the skin
  • 96% said it didn’t feel greasy
  • 83% said their skin felt hydrated all day
  • 83% said their skin looked more radiant after using it
  • 100% reported no irritation

One expert tester said:

The tint gave a nice dewy glow to my skin. I didn’t feel the need to wear makeup. It offered enough coverage to feel confident on its own. My fine lines looked reduced and my skin felt plump.”

We also submitted our Triple Retinol Renewal Eye Serum for testing, and the results were just as impressive.

Consumer Testing Panel Results:

  • 90% agreed their skin felt more hydrated
  • 90% agreed skin looked smoother
  • 100% agreed the serum felt lightweight on the skin
  • 100% agreed the serum absorbed quickly into the skin
  • 95% agreed it did not leave any sticky residue
  • 100% agreed the instructions were clear and easy to follow
  • 90% agreed their under-eye area felt more supple
  • 90% agreed the serum did not dry out their skin

Clinical Testing and Expert Feedback:

A GHI testing expert shared:

“A lightweight, fast-absorbing retinol eye serum, our GHI testers praise this serum’s ability to leave the under-eye area feeling more supple and refreshed. Testers saw visible improvements in fine lines, reduced puffiness, and an overall high level of satisfaction with the product after 8 weeks of use. One tester said: ‘This is the first time I have used a cream with retinol, and I’m definitely adding this to my beauty routine. I can see visible changes around my eye area. It feels more hydrated and I like its lightweight, smooth texture, making it easy to apply.”

Both products are now officially Good Housekeeping Institute Approved, demonstrating that Perricone MD formulas deliver visible results and meet the highest independent testing standards.

Why This Matters for You

We know skincare is an investment. While our products are always backed by science (with reviews and, often, clinical and consumer testing to substantiate our claims), this GHI badge gives you that extra layer of confidence in your product selection.

After all, it is one of the most rigorous testing processes in the industry, providing unbiased validation that a product:

  • Delivers on its claims
  • Is effective for real people
  • Meets high clinical standards
  • Has been thoroughly tested
We’re proud to have earned their seal of approval. Keep your eyes open for the GHI Approved badge across our website, in emails and on select product pages.
