Let’s be honest, who doesn’t want more radiant-looking skin?
When your skin looks dull, chances are good that it’s due to a low-grade inflammation on the cellular level. The result is altered blood circulation and decreased energy production—the outward result being a loss of radiance.
Classic signs of aging manifest as this inflammation affects the skin, including wrinkles, sagging skin, discoloration, enlarged pores and the aforementioned lack of radiance. We know that after only three days on the anti-inflammatory diet, our skin looks significantly healthier, more radiant and less wrinkled; and we know that topical anti-inflammatories (many of them from food-sourced antioxidants) provide many visible benefits.
Rule #1: Change Your Diet
Follow the anti-inflammatory diet to create visible radiance and glow from the inside out:
- High-quality protein, like that found in fish, shellfish, poultry and tofu
- Low-glycemic carbohydrates including colorful fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and legumes
- Healthy fats, such as those found in cold water fish (especially wild Alaskan salmon, halibut, sardines, herring, anchovies), nuts, seeds and extra virgin olive oil
- 6-8 glasses of pure spring water per day
- Antioxidant-rich beverages such as green tea
Rule #2: Skip the Sugar
Avoid sugary, starchy foods and beverages, which can rob your skin of its radiance and youthful contours.
Rule #3: Get Your Beauty Sleep
Cellular repair takes place while we sleep, resulting in smoother, more radiant-looking skin. When we’re sleep-deprived, our skin takes on a pasty, puffy and more wrinkled appearance. Skin’s permeability also increases during sleep, so this in turn can increase the benefits of topical antioxidants–giving new meaning to the term “beauty sleep.”
Avoid any activities that have bright lights shining in your face (such as watching TV or working on the computer) at least an hour before going to sleep, as these bright lights suppress the secretion of melatonin—a natural sleep inducer.
The cold, hard truth? Nothing is worse for your complexion than sleep deprivation. And as an added hit, it can also cause you to crave sugary, starchy foods (need we remind you about Rule #2?).
Rule #4: Hit the Gym
If you want beautiful skin, sometimes you have to work for it…in the gym, outside, whichever form of exercise you choose. Studies have indicated that exercise benefits the skin in much the same way it improves bone and muscle quality. Without regular activity, bones can become fragile and muscles atrophy.
Still not convinced? Try this on for size. When the skin of athletes is examined under a microscope, the impact of their high fitness levels is clearly apparent. Not only is skin thicker, but it also has more (and healthier) collagen—the fibers that give skin its strength and flexibility.
And when it comes to environmental toxins, forget about ’em; working up a good sweat can help cleanse the skin, while also increasing circulation to the face (promoting a glowing complexion).
Rule #5: Proper Skin Cleansing
Cleansing twice daily—in the morning and before bedtime—will keep the skin fresh and comfortable; but remember to use warm (not hot) water. The very best way to cleanse the skin is in the shower, as this will ensure that all of the cleanser is thoroughly rinsed from the skin. Just massage your cleanser onto damp skin in gentle, circular motions, rinse thoroughly and then pat your face dry.
